1) uses
**** The simple past tense indicates a finished action into the past. An event that is ended and has no extension to the present.
2) forms
* verbs in this tense are divided into two major groups:
A) regular verbs :
This type of verbs only requires to add "ed" at the end of it .
* example: I ( work ) ....worked... in Spain last year.
* she ( to clean)... cleaned... her bedroom yesterday evening.
B) irregular verbs :
This type of verbs should be learnt by heart , because they aquire different forms when conjugated into the past: such as
Go ===》 went
Eat ===》ate
Buy ==》 bought
Teach ==》 taught
Think ==》 thought
Bring ===》 brought
Example
_ I (to buy ) ....bought.... this house ten years ago.
_ she ( to teach) ...taught.... English when she was 20 years old.
C) negative form
****This is the easiest part in the past.
Whenever we want to conjugate a verb into the negative past form we just need to place : did not / didn't before the main verb which should be bare infinitive.
So we it would be : subject + didn't/ did not + main verb( bare infinitive) + object/ complement.
* example:
_ yesterday I (not/ go)... didn't/ did not go.... to gym.
_ last week Emma( not/ travel).....didn't travel to America.
_ They ( not/ call) ...didn't call... us last night.
D) questions in the simple past
To form a question in the past all we need is to place 《 did 》 in the beginning of the sentence .
Note : we use did for any type of subjects ( I, You, she , he ,it , they , we , you )
* Did + subject + verb ( bare infinitive) + object/ complement.
*Example:
_Did you wash the car ?
_did she call the police ?
_ did you buy a new TV set ?
3) indicators
***** Indicators are important tools to be aware of. It indicates the tense of the verb.
Simple past indicators
Yesterday / .... ago / in + date ( in 1990)
Last { week / month / year / night ........ }
Example:
